In every public speaking situation, one third of your audience will instantly be predisposed to liking you. Another third may not have an instantly favorable reaction to you for reasons totally beyond your control, such as your coincidental resemblance to a disliked relative. The last third will be on the fence and can be swayed either way. By establishing rapport, clearly indicating where you will be taking everybody and the value of going there with you, you can push that neutral third over to your side quickly. Once you’ve got 66 percent in your corner, there’s a good chance the others will follow!
